We visited Chalet Cathay for a late Easter, in mid-April in warm spring weather. The chalet itself – 5 minutes’ walk from the ski station or a 2 second climb from the driveway to the bus stop – was a sumptuous, elegant homestead, tucked away from the road, offering an oasis of clam and peace, and glorious views. It’s very quickly apparent that this is a labour of love for the owners. Small touches and thoughtfulness abound in every room, from the neatly designed boot room to the electric blinds that protect you from the alpine sun, to the clever wrap around terrace with the delicately carved wood surrounding the terrace fencing. Everywhere speaks quality, far too much quality for a standard rental! Although the snow in the village had melted, we could picture the warm house with warm fire and overhanging roof covered in white cotton powder like those in a typical Swiss resort postcard.
The resort itself is really a find. Once we got the gondola up, we arrived in a remarkably quiet ski-resort, which had managed to retain all the winter’s snow, even though the chalet must have been sitting in 12-15 degrees. Plenty for the whole family to enjoy, from blue fun-runs with slow tunnels and mini jumps, to lolloping red and black off-piste. More than enough to enjoy for a few solid days, before one can venture off from the top and over down to the much busier Verbier on the other side, should you wish. Plenty has been written about that resort, but the village of La Tzoumaz and Chalet Cathay were the warmth we were seeking at the end of each day and where we wished to return.
We were in Chalet Cathay two weeks ago, and still the children talk about their holiday there every day. When they went back to school this morning our son said he wished he was going to ski school in Switzerland instead! That says it all really; a fantastic and memorable time was had by all!
It was great to be within easy gondola ride of the ski mecca Verbier, but we also really appreciated returning at the end of the day to the quiet and peace of La Tzoumaz. Having said that, this small family resort has everything you need, in terms of télécabine, supermarket, cafés, restaurants and Tourist Office.
After exhilarating days out in the open air, we spent enjoyable evenings in the welcoming atmosphere of Chalet Cathay, unwinding over dinner and a glass of wine.
Oh, and what spectacular views when you wake in the morning from this home nestled into the side of the mountain. We shall try to hold on to these, and what are some very happy memories, for as long as possible as we slip back into our usual daily work-school routine!
Thank you so much to Ying and Wong for welcoming us into your special family home, full of style, character and warmth!
When I went skiing in La Tzoumaz, I found it really sensational and it really encourages people to love the sport. When I went to have the skiing lesson it was my first time so I was nervous and I found it scary. The next morning I rolled out of bed and said ‘Can I have another lesson because skiing is my best sport now!’
Chalet Cathay is one of the best places on Earth for me besides my own house. The whole design of the chalet looked excellent from top to bottom! I liked the solid wood kitchen and the upper floor was slick because of the mezzanine. From the luxurious beds to the welcoming hosts everything was perfecto. What was more was the swiftness of getting from one place to another (La Tzoumaz-Verbier). It was near an A1 gondola ride towards skiing runs which means it was located right in the centre of the cool resort.
Kin-Yee & Kin-Wah’s First Ever Skiing Holiday!
In February 2016 we were staying at Cathay for the 2nd time, but in Tzoumaz we were staying for the 15th time! You understand we had lost our heart to Tzoumaz with its fine slopes but after one stay at Cathay we also have lost our heart to this beautiful chalet. We are a family, living in the Netherlands in Brabant and Limburg. Our party members are my brother with his wife and 3 daughters with their boyfriends, my family with my husband and 2 sons and girlfriend and a cousin.
We all love skiing but we also love to relax and play board games together in a very friendly house. Cathay gives us the opportunity to be together in a well-furnished living room with seats available for all of us. In the evening we make a delicious meal in the kitchen, which is very well equipped. Cathay is the best way to stay in Tzoumaz!
Our holidays at the Chalet Cathay were really amazing! We had a wonderful stay!
The owners are very professional and the exchanges of information prior to the holiday were very much complete and kind. You know that you are in good hands and you feel welcome already. The Chalet itself is very well designed, with a lot of light, very nice decoration. We had a lot of sun and could enjoy the terrace in the mornings and afternoons! Ski slopes are 7 min walk away or else there is a convenient shuttle bus.
We have only positive things to say about these holidays and will strongly recommend this property to our friends for future holidays. We also plan to be back ourselves!
Chalet Cathay is one of the best places we have stayed in. The chalet is beautiful, cosy, and tastefully decorated, making you feel at home immediately. It is spacious enough allowing two families with four kids never feeling in close proximity. The cloakroom at the entrance offers a very useful area to get dressed with the huge equipment needed in the winter season. The kitchen is incredibly well furnished. The mezzanine is welcomed, offering a nice playing area for the kids.
The chalet is also very good located, very close from the ski facilities. La Tzoumaz that we have also discovered, is very nice and uncrowded, and offers a wonderful ski area, including Verbier. The kids started snowboarding and were able to go on the red slopes at the end of the week!
Next year’s holiday at Chalet Cathay is booked already!
Thank you Wong and Ying for everything!
Chalet Cathay is a lovely and spacious chalet. There is plenty of space for skis and boots and the cloak room is super handy. The driveway is cleared when it snows so the access is secured. The bus stop is almost in front of the house but outside the high season you might have to walk (which is still ok).
The chalet is super well equipped and lets you prepare even the most complicated meals. We brought our own herbs but the array present was enormous. The beds were comfortable and there was enough hot water to give 9 persons their shower but we had to spread out a bit which is only normal. The chalet was everything it said on the website and everything was spotless.
We had a very lovely stay and would certainly consider to return.
We arrived and were immediately gobsmacked by the quality and spaciousness of the accommodation.
Once settled in we made use of the fantastic kitchen area and made dinner. There is every conceivable kitchen item you could wish for and full instructions on how to use all the appliances. The table can seat 12 easily and the entire living/kitchen area is open plan so everyone is together. There is a games area with TV up on the mezz where the kids would spend some time and a big flat screen TV in the living area with UK channels. The garage area was a great place to keep all the beer and wine and there is also a large fridge out there too. We woke to stunning views from the balconies across the mountains and down the valley. A bus stop is right outside with free shuttle to resort centre and the lift station which is 2 minutes away although we drove down in our minibus with all the ski gear and managed to park nearby for free. The lift station was never that busy in the afternoon and whisks you up to the top of the Savoleyres in about 10 minutes. The skiing is superb especially across the Verbier side but maybe not ideal for beginners as number of easy runs is a bit limited. Not bad but there are better beginner resorts. There are plenty of lovely restaurants up in the mountains to stop for a coffee or a beer.
All in all we had a fantastic week in a stunning chalet and I would highly recommend Chalet Cathay.
We had a great time in La Tzoumaz!
Great snow, great weather, great Chalet Cathay!
We were very happy with all the detailed organisation & information, especially the baby chairs and beds for the two little ones.
We spent all of our time on the great slopes, and the children had a lot of fun!
All in all, a memorable holiday.
Many thanks to Wong & family.
What a fantastic location and what a fantastic week the 8 of us skiers and snowboarders had staying at Chalet Cathay in La Tzoumaz.
It is quite simply the best accommodation we have stayed in and we wanted for nothing. The chalet is roomy of high quality and very very comfortable. A perfect base for our exploration of this area and also Verbier, which was just up and over the other side via the lift system.
The owners offered great advanced pre-trip advice and everything went very smoothly. I’m sure that one day soon we will be back!
Love the website also… great pics and very easy to use.
Thanks for everything again, Wong!
All the best from the Whittlesea party.
We will keep a very nice remember of la Tzoumaz at the chalet Cathay.
All was done to organize an easy arrival and stay: all the precise answers to our many questions…, how lucky we were to find travel cots, high chairs and changing table for our 7 month old granddaughter and the very cosy chalet after a long road.
Our labrador “sonate” was very happy in the snow for her first time!
Nice week of ski: no queues, snow and we liked “Dany” and “Marmotte” restaurants and felt so well coming back to the chalet after all day out….
We will not forget “Marta” a very nice and kind baby sitter from Poland who lives at Isérables and her wonderful smile.
Thank you all for this week…
We had a fabulous holiday at Chalet Cathay in early January.
In the chalet itself we particularly loved the huge interior spaces, beautifully fitted out kitchen and amazing mountain views. We also appreciated all the little amenities like heated flooring, cloak room, heated boot dryer racks and choice of UK power extensions. The beds were super comfy and the bathrooms both beautiful and nice and warm.
Chalet Cathay is really perfect for families with huge dining and living spaces and lots of space for kids to runaround inside and out. The boys particularly enjoyed the ‘den’ upstairs where they could play games and watch TV away from the adults.
Everyone was really friendly and we all loved taking lessons in such a beautiful yet uncrowded place. We’re all beginner skiers and couldn’t believe we were able to practice on beautiful ski runs which we had practically to ourselves – an amazing experience!
I had a great holiday.
It was excellent when you take ski lessons. The ski lessons were not very far away from the chalet. When I took ski lessons for the first time I wasn’t very accurate but by the last time I got it. I went there with my friend – we had snowball fights with my Daddy. The chair lifts were fun going up to the skiing lessons.
I had hot chocolate at the top of the mountain which was yummy!
What could possibly be better than skiing with your mates on a mountain made out of Toblerone?!
I loved my skiing holiday. Chalet Cathay is in a nice area because there’s a park nearby and it’s fun there. It has swings, slides, a tree house and a zip wire. I got the bus to the gondola which only took 1 minute. It was fun when I went on the gondola with my friends. I loved skiing with my Dad and going on the chair lift. My bedroom was the best because it had a bunk bed!
We went to Switzerland with my friends from school to ski and snowboard. It was lots of fun and next time we are going on a helicopter! (Dad: dream on, son!) I slept in my den in a sofa bed and it was comfortable.
It’s really fun going to Switzerland.
I think the snow is quite deep.
In the chalet it’s nice and warm.
It is so fun going skiing with my friends.
You can go snowboarding as well.
And there are nice views on top of the mountains.
I went to a ski school with Anabelle, Tallulah and Jake. I learnt to ski down half of a tall mountain. I was in a house with them and we had separate bedrooms. We skied so fast and without poles. We went on chair lifts. I enjoyed it because we were going so fast.

We had a fantastic holiday in La Tzoumaz during February half-term this year.
The owners were always happy to answer any questions we had and the management company in the resort was extremely accommodating, making the whole process from booking to arrival as seamless as possible.
Chalet Cathay has been beautifully designed with everything you could possibly need for a relaxing holiday away.
The views from the chalet are stunning with the bus stop a short walk away, making it a perfect location to access the slopes.
The ski area in La Tzoumaz we loved, no queues (even in half-term) and plenty of skiing for everyone.
La Tzoumaz links well to Verbier, and if you head off the blue, a visit to La Marmotte for lunch is a must for a great rösti and the puddings were good too! La Tzoumaz itself has a small central area with an après-ski bar, a few restaurants, ski hire shops and a supermarket.
We had such a great holiday here and would love to return but the New Year week is already booked!! But we’ll be back as we loved it and have no hesitation in recommending to others.
As a family we like to try different ski locations and this was our first holiday in Switzerland. We loved the views and slopes of La Tzoumaz and Verbier.
Whilst the snow conditions were not the best, the stay at Chalet Cathay more than made up for it, an amazing homely chalet with great views, comfort and ideal to relax in at the end of a day’s skiing and boarding.
With our family of six adults and three young children, it was non-stop action and the cuckoo clock was a great success as it kept our two 2 year old grandsons rushing with excitement to watch. Making snowmen and sledging in the garden provided lots of fun whilst serious skiing was taking place up the mountain.
If we come back to La Tzoumaz again we will definitely want to stay at Chalet Cathay.
For about 30 years we are used to spending our Christmas holiday in the snow of Switzerland.
For 6 years we went to Quatre Vallées, for the 5th time we were located in La Tzoumaz and for the 1st time we chose Chalet Cathay.
The snow conditions could be better this year but the chalet was lovely, beautiful, cosy, relaxed, fantastic, has a great view and is well equipped, have nice beds and a great lounge…it was almost a dream.
So we decided to come back for Christmas 2014 and have booked already!
If you’re reading this and wondering whether to book, do so – you won’t be disappointed!
Chalet Cathay is beautiful! It’s easily accessed from the main road just a couple of hundred metres from the télécabine. For your convenience, there are lockers in the télécabine, which are good value and come in various sizes. Our kids are keen swimmers and were delighted also to find a good swimming pool at the télécabine.
The chalet’s first floor is a large open plan kitchen/dining/living area. It has stunning views down the valley, with a wrap-around balcony that’s well protected by the deep overhang of the roof.
The ground floor bedrooms below all have comfortable beds with good-sized storage. Unlike a lot of other ski accommodation you have plenty of room around the beds to get dressed. My wife and I slept upstairs in the mezzanine that’s open to the ground floor. We loved waking up to the view through floor to ceiling windows. It may not suit those who go to bed early but we were so comfy that even when someone pottered about downstairs we weren’t disturbed by them.
The leather sofas are of the sink-into-and-snooze variety and the dining table readily accommodates large parties. The kitchen has EVERYTHING you might need. There are at least three ways of making coffee! The cutlery, crockery and cooking utensils are plentiful and of high quality. And we made a lovely cake for our son’s 10th birthday. Toasty dry boots off the boot heater in the morning are so much nicer than cold wet ones and having the cloakroom area to suit up and store ski jackets etc works well. We found our kit that had been hung up in the cloakroom was always dry in the morning (under-floor heating!)
Now the skiing. This is the kind of place you feel you don’t really want to tell too many people about – the secret might get out and spoil it. It’s soooo quiet. We had blue sky days after a big dump of snow when we managed to ski entire runs without seeing ANYONE else.
All in all a terrific holiday. We hope to be back soon!
La Tzoumaz Ski Poem
Switzerland is kind of nice,
Most of the hills are covered in ice.
One of the hills I fell over twice,
Switzerland is kind of nice.
Come on grown-ups go in a straight line,
Come on grown-ups give it a try!
Come on grown-ups there’s no need to cry,
Come on grown-ups go in a line!
Come on grown-ups you’re wasting more time,
Come on grown-ups go in a line!
Wait up bro!
Some of us are kind of slow.
Don’t just go on and race,
We’re trying to set a pace.
So wait up!
My benchmarks for skiing have always been resorts in the French Alps – Meribel, l’Alpe d’Huez, Serre Chevalier, Vars. This year we wanted to change our habit. So we searched the internet for a comfortable chalet for 9 people with space, charm and good facilities.
In September last year I discovered the website for Chalet Cathay and sent a first email to the owner. In a few days it was booked. The contact was easy and the website is really professional. Now we just had to wait…
Returned to Paris after this first Swiss experience, I just want to share a few words to tell how much we’ve enjoyed our holiday in La Tzoumaz. The reality was much nicer than I had expected.
The chalet is beautiful. The quality of the facilities, the charm of the decoration, the space, the comfort of the bedding… everything was perfect. In my job, I am in charge of renovating hotels for a large hotel group so I am obviously very sensitive to these things.
Loved seeing the pictures of the owners’ family in the entrance. It is like a sort of welcoming from friends. Like them, we have found pleasure in cooking. There are so many things you can do with the equipment in the kitchen. We’ve tried also Le Pistard for a local dinner. Really fine with very nice staff. Marvellous also to have fresh bread from Le Pistard delivered each morning. Great service!
We skied each day starting early under a large sun. The lift was quite empty without French people… so nice for us! At the end of the day it was a pleasure to come back “home” and after a few days it did feel like ours!
The kids have made great progress during this week. They really love skiing and it is very fun for us now to ski together everywhere. Next year we will not have holidays in common as every 2 out of 3 years the Auvergne and Paris have different dates. We still have a lot to discover in the 4 Valleys so we plan to come back in 2015!
Our family had the most wonderful holiday at Chalet Cathay. From the first communication with the owners through to booking the lessons at the Ski School the whole process was seamless.
On arriving at the chalet we immediately felt at home, with the children soon getting comfortable with the PlayStation and deciding which DVDs they were going to watch. It was immediately apparent that great thought, love and commitment had gone into the planning and furnishing of the chalet, with a desire for every guest to feel relaxed and comfortable. This had been achieved in abundance. Comfortable seating, cosy fire, light, airy, spacious and tastefully decorated it would be impossible not to feel relaxed at Chalet Cathay with non-skiers in particular having a lovely, homely environment in which to unwind.
It’s just a short walk to the village amenities or a walk/bus ride up to Les Etablon Café – a great place to meet the skiers for lunch or aprés ski as the piste runs straight past.
The helpfulness of the owners and the friendly attitude of the Ski School staff (Sophie in the office and Ketsia our instructor for the week) makes La Tzoumaz a wonderful place for a holiday. We would love to return one day.
Thank you Wong and Ying.
The chalet was perfect. We had a good week and somehow even enjoyed the heavy rain (something new for us on a ski holiday!) The nice thing was that even after a night of rain there was still enough skiable snow left higher up on the mountain.
Amazing Christmas week!
Sun and snow all week long. Paradise.
We had a great holiday at Chalet Cathay. Very comfortable and well located. The kitchen is very well equipped for cooking.
Thanks to the owners for their assistance. Definitely a chalet holiday to be repeated.
We are a German family of four and would like to thank Chalet Cathay for a wonderful relaxing week in its caring embrace.
My husband and teenage children were very impressed with the ski area and the pistes and I as a non-skier felt really comfortable in these nice surroundings.
It was also very nice that I could share lunch with them at a ski-lodge – Bar des Etablons – you can reach directly from the main road past Chalet Cathay heading up the mountain.
We enjoyed very much Le Pistard’s catering on three evenings – the quality of the food was very good, big portions at a very reasonable price – they deliver the food freshly cooked exactly at the time you ordered it and it comes in a big heated box, so it is always nice and hot.
A special event with a lot of fun was the tobogganing – but be careful – it really gets fast!
The perfect finish to this special week was a short stay at Montreux beside Lake Geneva on our way back home.
A big compliment to the owners – they created their home very thoughtfully and tastefully and we did not miss anything – you can really feel they care.
Thank you very much – we will be back for sure!
We’re a group of keen skiers, aged 9 to 73, from Harrogate and Wiltshire with up to 50 years experience skiing in the Alps and Colorado. We’ve stayed in just about every type of ski accommodation that exists.
Chalet Cathay is beautiful. It met all of our needs with plenty of room for all of us to relax and enjoy the wonderful views from every window. We took advantage of the option to have our evening meals catered for by Le Pistard, a local restaurant. Each night we were delighted by a delicious, hearty three course dinner delivered to our door between 18.30 and 19.00 after a brilliant day skiing off-piste powder snow.
The chalet is a short walk, or bus ride, from the télécabine. In the mornings, some of us were just too keen to ski the wonderful wide pistes, off-piste itineraries or explore the 4 Valleys to wait for the bus! We also enjoyed the cosy alpine huts and atmospheric restaurants throughout the 4 Valleys for lunch, in particular Chez Simon on the chalet’s local hill Savoleyres and Chez Dany on the Médran side. At the end of each day we all preferred to stop at the Bar des Etablons for après-ski just off the piste and then catch the short bus ride down from there to the entrance to the chalet’s drive rather than ski back to the télécabine bus stop.
We all agreed it was the perfect family and friends ski holiday. The chalet is extremely comfortable and the 4 Valleys ski area caters well for all ski levels, both on and off-piste.
It’s unheard of for us but we shall definitely be returning in the future!
Such a pleasure staying at Chalet Cathay!
So nice to go to a place where we don’t have to compromise anything. Travelling with a small baby and a toddler is typically stressful but upon arrival, we felt cozy and comfortable instantly. Didn’t feel an ounce of cold the entire week and the children slept beautifully.
I absolutely LOVE to cook so finding things in the chalet kitchen that we don’t even have at home was great. The beds in the chalet were soft and luxurious with comfortable luxury bedding and towels.
It was great to have the washer and dryer on site too. With two children, things always get messy and most holiday accommodation does not offer the luxury of brand spanking new laundry facilities.
The best part of the chalet is the view of the mountains. Nothing stands in the way of the scenic beauty. It was completely inspiring to look out of the massive windows and imagine what fun things we could get up to out in the snow!
It was so lovely to visit at Christmas time too. The entire experience was relaxing, stress free and wonderful. We can’t wait to get back there!!
Chalet Cathay is completely enchanting. It is a paradise and I am completely in love. We are currently in the process of booking another week for early 2012! Who’s coming?!!
I’m a Canadian skier and snowboarder now living in the U.K. I’ve spent plenty of time in resorts such as Whistler and Jackson Hole in North America, St. Anton and Zermatt in the Alps and heli in Alaska. I enjoy off-piste freeriding and mountain solitude.
With that in mind, I was expecting Chalet Cathay and its nearby resorts to offer a decent selection of terrain with the inevitable and typical crowds of a big name European resort in high season. What I pleasantly discovered was practically empty hills, easy-access hiking to challenging terrain in La Tzoumaz / Savoleyres and knee deep powder that wasn’t fully tracked even after 3 days of riding.
I ventured to Verbier proper on one occasion (an easy and scenic journey from La Tzoumaz via the lift & bus system) to check out the terrain.
The mountain peaks there are definitely impressive and there are certain tasty bits of off-piste riding to be had, but the amount of time it took to get to them and the limited length of tracked-out runs before having to queue again in a lift lessened the experience. On its own it would have been a great ski trip, but when compared to the empty powder of La Tzoumaz / Savoleyres, I found myself anxious to leave Verbier proper and return. La Tzoumaz itself has a peaceful ski vibe with an authentic, friendly feel. There are enough little cliffs, couloirs, trees and hikes on this part of the mountain to keep expert freeriders entertained.
Chalet Cathay itself is extremely cosy and relaxing with a view to die for. A perfect place to unwind in the evening and get prepped for another day on the hills. The chalet is very skier friendly – with a large change room, a garage with heated boot holders and snowboard/ski racks and with plenty of showers there was never a crowded feeling.
All in all, I would have to say this was one of my best ski/board vacations of my life – the beauty of the Swiss alps without crowds, with days and days of powder and with extremely fun off-piste terrain to play in all under mostly sunny skies and staying in one of the most beautiful chalets I have seen. To top it off, the locals and visitors were all very friendly without fail. I highly recommend the hill and the chalet and plan to repeat this vacation verbatim as it ticked so many of my personal boxes.
